Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, who was held captive by Hamas in Gaza for 548 days, has announced his intention to return to military service next month. Alexander was released as part of a deal between Hamas and the US, without Israeli involvement, in May.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier spoke at an event hosted by the private US organization FIDF, which supports Israeli soldiers. In his speech, Alexander described his time as a Hamas captive as 'the hardest days of my life,' involving days of struggle, pain, and separation from his family. He also urged that while he is free, many others are still in captivity in Gaza.

Alexander, who holds both Israeli and US citizenship, was abducted during the Hamas and extremist attacks in Gaza on October 7, 2023, among more than 250 people. It is estimated that around 20 captives are still alive in Gaza.

Throughout his captivity, Alexander was held in the dark tunnels under the coastal strip of Gaza. During his speech, he expressed his gratitude for the support he received from FIDF and the Israeli public during his time in captivity.

Alexander's speech concluded with the statement, 'Until victory.' He emphasized the importance of continuing to support the Israeli military and the IDF in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Israeli people.

In the past, Hamas has claimed to have distributed captives across several neighborhoods in Gaza City to halt the Israeli offensive. However, this fact was not mentioned in Alexander's speech at the event.

Alexander's return to military service is a testament to his resilience and dedication to serving his country. His story is a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families, and the ongoing challenges faced by the Israeli military in ensuring the safety and security of the Israeli people.
