Ex-Footballer in Hot Water: Taiwo Leo Atieno, native of London and former player for Kenya, Faces Assault and Coercive Behavior Charges

Good day folks! Let's dive into the latest scoop—Taiwo Leo Atieno, a former footballer with a colorful past, has found himself in the dock for some serious allegations.

Atieno, who hails from Brixton and played for countries both England and Kenya, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 39-year-old, who had a brief stint with Luton Town and Torquay United, appeared in court this week via video link from HMP Wormwood Scrubs, sporting a suit and tie.

The charges against him are not trivial—he's accused of assaulting and causing actual bodily harm to Keisha Buchanan, a founding member of the popular pop group Sugababes, over a period spanning approximately 13 years. It's a timeline stretching from January 2012 to January 2015.

But the drama doesn't end there. Atieno is also slapped with charges of controlling or coercive behavior against Buchanan between December 2015 and May 2018. The accusations include manipulating her finances, dictating her gym schedule, and even banning her from wearing red lipstick. This, allegedly, caused Buchanan "serious alarm or distress," hampering her normal day-to-day activities.

Meanwhile, Atieno is also charged with breaching a non-molestation order, thereby posting information about Buchanan to a third party online and emailing her several times during 2024. All this has resulted in additional charges against him.

Atieno has been granted conditional bail and is set to enter pleas on August 22. His trial is scheduled to commence on April 13, 2026.

Buchanan became a household name as one of the original members of Sugababes in 1998. The band went through lineup changes over the years, with Buchanan being the last remaining original member before leaving in 2009. The founding trio regained the rights to the Sugababes name in 2019 and performed together at Glastonbury Festival in 2022.
