Ready for a change, Horst Hrubesch—the esteemed figure of Hamburger SV (HSV)—says goodbye after five gripping years as the youth chief. In an unexpected announcement on Thursday, it was revealed that the 74-year-old won't be renewing his contract, which expires soon. "The time has come for new blood to take charge. I'm awfully pleased and confident that I'm passing the torch to the upcoming generation," said Hrubesch.

Over the years, he's been more than a just captain. He was the spirited leader of the HSV team that emerged victorious in the European Cup of Champions back in 1983—an unforgettable victory etched in the memory of every football enthusiast. Leaving his glorious playing days behind, he worked for the German Football Association (DFB) for a staggering 19 years. Even upon his return to HSV in 2020, he stepped up tomantle the responsibilities twice as an interim coach, first with the Hamburg professionals, unfortunately missing out on the Bundesliga return in 2021, and then with the German women's national team, guiding them to Olympic bronze in 2024.

HSV's Sport Director, Stefan Kuntz, expresses his heartfelt appreciation for the icon. "Anyone lucky enough to know Horst and have him on board wouldn't gladly let him go," said HSV Sport Director, Stefan Kuntz. "But once Horst makes up his mind, it's nearly impossible to change it. Ultimately, we owe him and his family a debt of gratitude for dedicating so many years of his life in a truly responsible capacity."
