Former captive of Hamas looks to re-enlist in military forces
In a moving speech at an event hosted by the private US organization FIDF, which supports Israeli soldiers, Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American, announced his intention to return to military service. Alexander was held captive by the terror organization Hamas for 548 days in the Gaza Strip.
Alexander's captivity was marked by days of struggle, pain, and separation from his family. He was taken hostage along with over 250 people during the Hamas and extremist groups' attack from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Alexander was held captive in the dark tunnels beneath the coastal strip of Gaza.
During his time as a Hamas captive, Alexander was distributed across several neighborhoods in Gaza City, as Hamas took measures to halt the contentious Israeli offensive. There is no evidence that Hamas itself or any external party has publicly supported Hamas' capitulation in Gaza City. The Israeli government, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli military leaders, has not supported a Hamas capitulation but has rather demanded Hamas surrender while continuing military operations in Gaza City.
Despite the hardships he faced, Alexander affirmed that his story doesn't end with survival, but continues with service. He urged that while he is free, many others are still captive in the Gaza Strip. It is estimated that around 20 captives are still alive in the Gaza Strip.
Alexander was released in May as part of a deal between Hamas and the US, without Israeli involvement. His speech concluded with 'Until victory.' Alexander holds both Israeli and US citizenship. The IDF stands for the Israel Defense Forces.
This announcement marks a significant step for Alexander, who has faced immense adversity and emerged stronger. His determination to return to military service is a testament to his resilience and dedication to his country.
