Former captive, formerly of Hamas, expresses desire to resume military service

In a moving announcement at a New York event hosted by the private US organization FIDF, Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, who was held captive by Hamas for 548 days in the Gaza Strip, has declared his intention to return to military service.

Alexander, a 21-year-old who holds both Israeli and US citizenship, was abducted during the Hamas and extremist attacks in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, along with over 250 people. His captivity took place in the coastal strip of the Gaza Strip and consisted of 'days of struggle, pain, and separation from his family,' as he described in his speech.

During his time as a Hamas captive, Alexander was held in the tunnels under the Gaza Strip, which he referred to as 'the hardest days of my life.' Despite the harrowing experience, Alexander affirmed that his story does not end with survival, but continues with service. He concluded his speech with the powerful statement, 'Until victory.'

The deal that led to Alexander's release was between Hamas and the US, without Israeli involvement. He was released in May as part of the deal.

Israel estimates that around 20 captives are still alive in the Gaza Strip. The names of these individuals and their specific city locations have not been publicly disclosed. However, it is known that the remaining hostages are distributed across neighborhoods inside Gaza City.

Edan Alexander expressed concern for these captives still held in the Gaza Strip and plans to return to Israel next month. Upon his return, he will serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the military of Israel.

The event where Edan Alexander made his announcement was a testament to the support the private US organization FIDF provides to Israeli soldiers and their families. The organization's efforts to aid Israeli soldiers, both during and after their service, are crucial in maintaining the strength and resilience of the Israeli military.
