Book with one of her last interviews - Former Biathlon Champion Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Pakistan Mountaineering Accident

Former Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, known for her incredible endurance and determination, has tragically died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The 31-year-old athlete, who retired from biathlon in 2020, had turned her focus to mountaineering and had recently set a world record for climbing Ama Dablam. Her love for climbing and fearless yet careful approach have been highlighted by her father in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Dahlmeier's mountaineering career was short but remarkable. In autumn 2024, she climbed Ama Dablam, a 6,814-meter peak in the Himalayas, twice in just three days. This feat unintentionally set a world record. Despite the grueling nature of the climb, Dahlmeier planned to climb again alone after only a two-day rest, stating, 'I go again, and I go alone.'

Her passion for mountaineering was evident in her approach to biathlon as well. She pushed herself to the limit to win gold in the individual race at the 2017 World Championships, collapsing afterwards due to exhaustion. This determination and resilience made her a formidable competitor and a beloved figure in the sporting world. In her new book, 'Passion for Biathlon', one of Dahlmeier's last interviews, conducted by journalist Taufig Khalil, offers insights into her career and love for the sport.

Dahlmeier's death is a devastating loss to the world of sport. Her family had hoped to recover her body but acknowledged that it was no longer possible. The mountaineering community and biathlon fans around the world mourn her passing and celebrate her incredible achievements. Dahlmeier's legacy lives on through her records, her interviews, and the inspiration she provided to countless athletes.
