Playing one more time for the youth club: Mertesamber makes a comeback against Hannover - Former Arsenal defender Mertesacker returns to the youth ranks.
Get ready, football fans! On June 27, at 6:00 PM, former national team player Per Mertesacker (40) is stepping back onto the pitch - but this time for a special reason. The gamesman will be playing for TSV Pattensen 1890, a local league team holding a dear place in his heart, in a friendly match against second-division side Hannover 96. The news was announced on Instagram, with Neue Presse reporting the exciting update first.
Mertesacker's football journey began in the small town south of Hannover. He started his youth career in Pattensen, later moving to Hannover 96's youth academy, where he rose through the ranks to become a professional and national team player. After stints at Werder Bremen and Arsenal, this World Cup champion is ready to don his boots once more for one last hurrah.
"I'm more than excited to put on the boots again for the club where I began at the tender age of 4," Mertesacker shared with Bild. "I'm in decent shape and plan to start the game, playing at least 30 minutes."
Despite the thrill of lacing up his boots once more, Mertesacker has no intention of making a permanent comeback. "A regular return to playing professionally isn't in the cards for me," he said. "But I believe my passport is still with TSV."
Inspired by his origins, Mertesacker has maintained his connection to his roots, staying involved as the head of Arsenal’s academy, where he oversees youth development. Keeping fit by occasionally training with the under-16 squad, Mertesacker's return to play is strictly limited to this single commemorative game.
So fear not, Arsenal fans! Your beloved "Big f**king German" is focusing on nurturing young talent rather than resurrecting his playing career. This one-off comeback is a testament to Mertesacker's love for the game and his enduring bond with TSV Pattensen.
