Forest Flood Prevention Measures Prove Successful in Kirn-Sulzbach

Heavy rain can still cause water to run into the valley, but measures can delay it. Revierleiter Tobias Helfenstein implemented successful flood prevention strategies in the forest near Kirn-Sulzbach, as seen during a heavy rain event in July 2023.

Helfenstein dug deep ditches and created retention basins in the forest to hold water, benefiting the forest floor by allowing more water to seep in during rain. He also leveled slopes next to the forest path to control water flow. Despite the terrain's steepness and rockiness, these measures have shown promise.

On May 19, 2024, a heavy downpour caused flash floods in Kirn-Sulzbach, the worst in recent history. Helfenstein documented the event to improve future flood mitigation. Recent rain has proven the success of these measures, with water collecting in the new ditches as intended.

While heavy rain can still cause water to run into the valley, measures implemented by Revierleiter Tobias Helfenstein have shown success in delaying and controlling floods. These strategies, such as creating retention basins and leveling slopes, have proven effective in the forest near Kirn-Sulzbach, protecting the valley floor from flash floods.
