Forest fires causing unrest; anticipation for rainfall
In the heart of Eastern Germany, wildfires have been causing havoc since the beginning of July, with the situation remaining critical, particularly around the Saalfelder Höhe and Gohrischheide. The fires, which have burned hundreds of square kilometers, have resulted in evacuations, injuries to firefighters, and a declaration of disaster alert.
The Gohrischheide, located on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg, is a particularly challenging area due to its former military training ground status. This restricts access and increases the risk of unexploded ammunition, making firefighting efforts more complex. Nearly 550 personnel have been deployed in Gohrischheide, but the area covers 2,800 hectares, approximately one tenth of the size of the city of Chemnitz.
The Saalfelder Höhe area in Reichmannsdorf is also affected, with forest floor fires reported. Several villages, including Heidehäuser, Neudorf, and parts of Lichtensee, have been evacuated, and residents have been urged to take only essentials and use protective masks against smoke.
Firefighting helicopters have been dropping hundreds of thousands of liters of water onto the fire sites, with three helicopters flying over the fire area and dumping tens of thousands of liters of water into the forest on Saturday. However, the number of personnel on site is expected to be reduced to a maximum of 300 on Monday due to exhaustion.
The weather situation remains challenging for the forest fire in the coming days. Although rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, it's uncertain if the fire-ravaged areas will receive any rain. Drier-than-normal conditions are expected across eastern Europe, including eastern Germany, for this month, implying minimal natural relief from rainfall in the short term. Fire weather indices indicate extreme to very extreme fire danger anomalies in eastern Europe, consistent with ongoing heatwaves and dry conditions. Seasonal temperature anomalies forecast hotter-than-usual conditions, with eastern Germany experiencing significant heat, contributing to severe fire risk.
The situation in the Gohrischheide in northern Saxony remains critical, with the risk of gusty winds that could further fuel the fire. The fire on the Saalfelder Height is not under control, according to the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district administration. The expected showers and thunderstorms are locally confined, offering little relief to the ongoing forest fires.
Unmanned firefighting robots from Brandenburg have also been deployed, but helicopter flights were suspended in the fire area on Sunday morning due to the need for personnel and heavy equipment in the peripheral areas.
As the battle against the forest fires continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of the firefighters, residents, and the environment, while hoping for favourable weather conditions to support efforts to bring the fires under control.
