Forest and vegetation firefighting operations are prepared by the Neuwied fire department
Neuwied Fire Department Bolsters Firefighting Abilities with New Training and Equipment
In response to the escalating challenges posed by increasingly severe weather conditions, the Neuwied fire department has initiated a significant transformation. Last fall, a collaborative training day was held with THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) and the Information and Communication Unit, marking the start of this transformative journey.
At the helm of this change is Jürgen Hermanns, the head of the forest and vegetation fire protection unit of the Koblenz fire department. Working closely with Fire Chief Kai Jost and Chief Fire Officer Stefan Hahn, Hermanns has been pivotal in developing and implementing the new forest and vegetation fire concept for the Neuwied fire department.
This new concept emphasizes uniform training for firefighters, stressing the need to manage vegetation fires distinctively from house fires. Two members from each Neuwied fire truck participated in this training, testing diverse deployment tools and strategies.
The city of Neuwied has invested approximately 30,000 euros to equip each fire truck with specialized tools, including fire backpacks and rakes. Lists with designated contact persons have been established for equipment provision in specific areas, ensuring swift and efficient response in emergencies.
The training covered various hazards, water supply and transport, and meteorology. One critical aspect highlighted was the potential for a large fire to generate its own weather, which can even result in a thunderstorm.
Recently, two members from each Neuwied fire truck completed a leadership training course led by the forest fire unit of the Koblenz fire department. Collaboration with THW and the Agriculture sector has been reinforced in the development process, underscoring the importance of inter-agency cooperation in firefighting.
The Neuwied fire department will continue to operate in a working group and integrate new experiences. Fire Chief Kai Jost asserts that the team is now well-prepared but underscores that the process is ongoing. The objective is to continually enhance the deployment strategy of the Neuwied fire department, ensuring the safety of the community amidst extreme weather conditions.
