Foreign worker dies, local man sentenced to hanging for the murder
In a shocking turn of events, 28-year-old Mohamad Amier Amzar Mohamad Aspar was sentenced to death by hanging for the 2018 murder of MD Ovaidul, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi worker, in the Sungai Kinta, Sungai Galah area, Kampung Gajah, Perak Tengah district.
The court found Mohamad Amier guilty of premeditated murder, a crime carried out in an extremely brutal manner, involving prolonged suffering. MD Ovaidul was beaten in his own home, then taken to the riverbank where a fatal cut was inflicted before his body was dumped into the river to conceal the crime.
Judge Su Tiang Joo handed down the sentence under Section 302 of the Malaysian Penal Code. Aggravating factors included interference with a witness. The victim, MD Ovaidul, was the breadwinner of his family and had planned to marry soon. Notably, the murderer was the son of the victim’s employer.
Mohamad Amier was represented by lawyer V Santhiran, while the prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Geetha Jora Singh. The victim’s brother, Md Hossain Khan, 37, testified in court about the impact statement.
Md Hossain Khan stated that his brother’s death was not a source of sorrow and loss for him. Before the incident, he had informed his brother of his plan to return to Bangladesh within a month to perform his wedding. The family had already started preparations in the village, but these plans were ruined when his brother was brutally murdered.
The brother’s body was sent back to Bangladesh. The murder, made even more tragic by the fact that it was committed by the brother himself, left a long and painful period of suffering for MD Ovaidul. Starting with being beaten in his own home, MD Ovaidul was then taken to the riverbank where his life was cruelly taken, and his body was discarded into the river to erase any trace of the crime.
The family had hoped for a sentence of death or imprisonment not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, or a fine not less than 12 strokes if not sentenced to death. The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of justice and the consequences of heinous acts.
In the Malaysian court system, Deputy Public Prosecutor Geetha Jora Singh led the prosecution of Mohamad Amier Amzar Mohamad Aspar, who was sentenced to death for the brutally violent murder of MD Ovaidul in Perak Tengah district. The crime, which involved a prolonged period of suffering, was committed in the Sungai Kinta, Sungai Galah area and included acts of beating, a cut leading to MD Ovaidul's fatal injury, and the body being dumped into a river. This shocking crime, made more tragic by the fact that MD Ovaidul's employer's son was the perpetrator, not only devastated the victim's family but also highlighted the need for justice and accountability in politics, general news, crime and justice, and war and conflicts.
