Sikorski: No Internal Border Controls Needed; Poland Secures EU External Borders

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski asserts that internal Schengen border controls are redundant due to Poland's secured EU external borders. Sikorski made this statement during a press conference with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Berlin on Wednesday.

"We aim to convince European politicians that there's no threat originating from here, thus making internal border controls within Schengen superfluous," Sikorski said confidently. With Europe's continued freedom of movement, it's essential to fortify the external borders first, and Poland has taken charge of this responsibility.

Meanwhile, the new German government has enhanced border control efforts at all German borders to combat irregular migration. Asylum seekers are being rejected directly by the federal police in this crackdown. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt intends to maintain this strategy, putting it into action despite a Berlin Administrative Court ruling from Monday that suspended the rejection of three individuals from Somalia. However, this decision doesn't set a precedent, as the federal government is waiting for a main proceedings decision before taking further action.

Interestingly, Poland and Germany have both expressed concern over migration, with Poland boosting its security along its eastern border, an EU border, towards Belarus and Russia. Simultaneously, Germany has implemented border controls since September 2024, including with Poland, as part of its migration management strategy. European cooperation on migration and border security seems to be a shared priority.
