In reaction to a substantial wildfire engulfing Biebrza National Park, spanning approximately 450 hectares of protected land, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his sentiments categorically. Speaking during a briefing with Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak and emergency services, Tusk sternly emphasized that a Polish citizen who conducts arson at the behest of foreign intelligence agencies should be considered a traitor.
"If a Polish citizen decides to commit arson on behalf of foreign services, for monetary gain, it must be treated as an act of treason. This is non-negotiable," Tusk asserted in Grzędy, near the afflicted area.
The precise underlying cause of the Biebrza wildfire remains under investigation, but the government is demonstrating resoluteness to tackle the broader issue of deliberate fires. Tusk alluded to the continued occurrence of "thoughtless and calculated arsons," often linked to common practices like burning grass.
The Council of Ministers will take up new legislation addressing arson during its upcoming Tuesday session, announced Tusk, stressing the urgency for stricter penalties as a means of deterring such catastrophic events in the future.
As the ongoing drought conditions intensify, heightening the risk of fires across nearly the entire country, the government remains steadfast in safeguarding national security and environmental preservation against both domestic and foreign infiltration.

As the battle against the spreading wildfire continues, more than 160 firefighters and 31 vehicles have been deployed to the scene.
