Foreign cinematic imports subjected to tariffs: Trump imposes duties on international films (regarding national security and propaganda)
Trump's Tariff War on Foreign Films: A Threat to National Security or Job Boost?
In a bold move, former President Donald Trump declared that he plans to impose tariffs on all films produced outside the United States, branding them a threat to national security. According to his Truth Social post, he believes the film industry within America is on the brink of collapse.
"Foreign countries are poaching our filmmakers and studios, leaving Hollywood and several other US areas in a state of destruction. It's a well-coordinated scheme by other nations, and it's undoubtedly a menace to our national security," Trump stated.
Beyond the threat to national security, Trump labeled foreign films as propaganda. As a result, he ordered the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to initiate a process for imposing a 100% tariff on all foreign films entering the country.
Interestingly, on April 2, Trump announced tariffs on 185 countries, ranging from 10 to 50 percent. Kazakhstan was among the countries affected by these tariffs.
During the subsequent trade war, China had announced plans to reduce American film imports. But, in late April, a poll was conducted by several major American publications to gauge public opinion on Trump's tariffs. The results showed that 64% of Americans oppose Trump's efforts to increase import tariffs.
As previously announced, Trump's focus on domestic film production aims to counter the offshoring of production to countries such as Canada, the UK, and Australia, which offer attractive tax incentives.
The response within the US film industry and among the public regarding Trump's tariff plan is still evolving. While some may support the move to boost job creation, others are concerned about increased costs and the potential impact on international relations.
It's essential to note that, faced with issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, labor strikes, and competition from streaming services, the US film industry has already been grappling with multiple challenges.
