Forecaster predicts duration of velvet season in Krasnodar Region
The velvet season on the Black Sea resorts in the Krasnodar Territory is set to continue, as of August 9, much to the delight of beachgoers. This extended period of comfortable weather conditions suitable for swimming and beach activities is primarily due to the high sea temperature and the persistence of favorable climatic conditions.
Roman Vilfand, the Scientific Director of Hydrometcenter, has stated that the sea temperature remains very high, a key factor in extending the velvet season. Water, unlike air, is a very inertial substance and cools down more slowly, making it maintain warmth into the early autumn.
The current weather conditions on the Black Sea coast are characterized by dry, cloudless weather, further contributing to the extended velvet season. As a result, the sea temperature, as stated by Vilfand, will continue to be high enough for swimming, allowing for a prolonged beach season beyond the typical summer months.
The velvet season, typically occurring in mid to late September, is when the high summer tourist influx diminishes as schools reopen, but the climate remains ideal for beach activities. This intermediate period, with pleasant weather but less crowding, effectively extends the tourist-friendly period along the Black Sea coast into September and sometimes beyond.
According to the latest data, the water temperature on the Black Sea resorts is 29°C in Sochi, 28°C in Gelendzhik and Tuapse, 27°C in Temryuk and Yeisk, 26°C in Novorossiysk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, 25°C in Anapa. The velvet season is still expected to last until the first decade of October.
It's worth noting that the Krasnodar Territory experienced a magnetic storm on August 8, but this event does not seem to have affected the ongoing velvet season. Additionally, a study conducted in Krasnodar to compare the effectiveness of air conditioning and film in protecting against heat in buses is not related to the velvet season or its expected duration.
In conclusion, the duration of the velvet season on the Black Sea resorts is influenced primarily by the timing of the end of the summer crowds and the persistence of favorable weather conditions, particularly warm air and water temperatures. The high water temperature of the Black Sea during this period keeps the sea comfortable for swimming and helps maintain favorable beach conditions, extending the beach season and making it an attractive time to visit Black Sea coast resorts like Batumi.
Environmental scientists are closely monitoring the persistence of high sea temperatures, a key factor in extending the velvet season on the Black Sea resorts, which could have implications for marine life and biodiversity. Roman Vilfand, a leading expert in meteorology, suggests that the high water temperature not only benefits the continued swimming season but also supports the principles of environmental science, as inertial water helps preserve the warm conditions into the early autumn.
