Weather agency issues alarm for extreme heat waves on Monday and Tuesday - Forecasted weather conditions for Monday and following Tuesday

Preparing for Severe Heat Stress in Southwest Germany

Southwest Germany is bracing for a significant heat wave, with the German Weather Service (DWD) issuing a warning for severe heat stress in large parts of the region, including cities like Stuttgart and Konstanz.

The heat stress warnings are still in effect for large parts of Baden-Württemberg, excluding parts of the east and northeast. On Tuesday, severe heat stress is expected up to an altitude of 800 meters.

To prepare for this heat wave, individuals and communities should take several precautionary measures.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to prevent dehydration, a critical risk during heat stress.

Avoid Direct Sun and Heat

Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day (usually mid-afternoon), seek shade or air-conditioned environments when possible.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Use loose-fitting, light-colored, and breathable clothes to reduce heat absorption and promote ventilation.

Use Cooling Methods

Utilize fans or air conditioning, take cool showers or baths, and keep windows closed during the hottest time to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Care for Vulnerable Groups

Pay extra attention to children, elderly, people with chronic illnesses, or pets, as they are more susceptible to heat stress.

Community and Infrastructure Measures

Municipalities in Southwest Germany may activate heat action plans, open cooling centers, or issue public health warnings through DWD alerts to mitigate risks.

Since DWD has issued a specific warning, monitoring their official updates and forecasts is essential to anticipate peak heat periods and take timely action.

On Monday, the severe heat will mainly affect the southernmost parts of the country, including the districts of Konstanz, Lörrach, Waldshut, and the Lake Constance district. In the southwest, there will be sunny weather with mostly clear blue skies and highs of 26 degrees on the Alb and up to 32 degrees along the Rhine.

The elderly and those in need of care are particularly at risk during the heat wave on Tuesday. The DWD recommends drinking enough water, even if you don't feel thirsty.

As of now, the DWD has not issued any new warnings beyond Tuesday evening. However, it is crucial to remain vigilant and follow the advice provided by the DWD and local health authorities. For localized advice, consulting official DWD portals and local health authorities for Stuttgart and Konstanz is recommended.

  1. In addition to personal precautions, Community policy should be implemented to activate heat action plans, open cooling centers, and issue public health warnings through DWD alerts in Southwest Germany's municipalities.
  2. Employment policy should be considered while scheduling outdoor work hours in this heat wave, prioritizing tasks during the cooler parts of the day to reduce exposure to severe heat stress among employees.
