Forecast reveals an increase in rain likelihood for Pittsburgh on Friday, with many regions predicted to stay dry
As autumn officially begins on Monday at 2 p.m., the region finds itself grappling with persistent drought conditions. The Drought Monitor updates their weekly maps on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., and the latest maps show that parts of the area are now under 'extreme' drought conditions, level 4.
The current map cut-off is at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and it appears that from Tuesday to Tuesday, our area recorded no rain whatsoever. However, there's some relief in sight as rain showers are expected to be more widespread on Monday morning, with the possibility of thunderstorms, and Tuesday looks to be the best chance for rain over the next 10 days.
Unfortunately, the forecast predicts a brief shower today, with low rain chances continuing through Sunday. High temperatures for the next 7 days are expected to be near 80 degrees, with highs in the mid-80s from today through Sunday. Morning lows will dip to the 50s, providing a cool start to the day.
The lack of rainfall has taken a toll on the region. Around 20 percent of the area is under a level 3 'severe' drought at this time, while slightly over half of our area is listed as under moderate drought conditions or worse. This has led to extremely low to non-existent water flows on area waterways and crop losses for Christmas tree farms.
The drought has also affected dairy farmers, who are struggling to make a profit due to the high cost of feeding their milking cows. The widest rainfall is expected during the night of September 21 to 22 in Berlin, with persistent light rain and a 90% precipitation probability, although thunderstorms are not explicitly forecasted in the next 10 days based on the current available data.
As the region moves into autumn, it's crucial to stay informed about the weather conditions and conserve water wherever possible to help mitigate the effects of the drought.
