Forecast Predicts Monsoon Arrival in Kerala on May 27 According to IMD; Earliest Rainfall since 2009

Here's some refreshing weather news for you! The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an early arrival of the southwest monsoon this year. The monsoon is expected to make its debut in Kerala by May 27, a week ahead of its usual June 1 arrival date. If this comes to pass, it'll mark the earliest arrival of the monsoon on mainland India since 2009, when it swooped in as early as May 23.

Monsoon Arrival Accelerated

Typically, the monsoon begins its journey in Kerala and gradually spreads across the country. Conversely, the withdrawal phase starts in northwest India around September 17 and ends by October 15.

IMD defines 'normal' seasonal rainfall to range between 96% and 105% of the long-term average, which sums up to 87 cm measured over the past 50 years.

IMD Expects Above-Average Rainfall

In its seasonal outlook released earlier this year, IMD predicted a robust monsoon for 2025, with rainfall predicted to be above the long-term average. Thankfully, the department dismissed the potential impact of El Niño, a climate phenomenon often associated with reduced monsoon activity in India.

M Ravichandran, Secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences, announced that India is likely to experience above-normal rainfall during the four-month monsoon season (June to September). The expected cumulative rainfall is estimated to be approximately 105% of the long-period average of 87 cm, with a margin of error of 5%.

Positive Outlook for Agriculture and Water Resource Planning

These early predictions of a strong monsoon are being hailed positively for the agriculture sector and water resource management. An official from the weather department clarified that the timeline of the monsoon's arrival in Kerala doesn't directly influence the overall rainfall received across the country during the season.

He further stated that the monsoon depends on various factors like regional dynamics, local climate conditions, and global weather patterns. Therefore, an early onset in Kerala doesn't necessarily indicate a speedy or patterned spread to other regions.
