Scorching Weekend Ahead: Heatwave and Thunderstorms Set to Hit Germany
Forecast for the weekend: Scorching temperatures give way to thunderstorms
Get ready for some sizzling weather this weekend, Germany! Temperatures are expected to soar, potentially reaching a sweltering 37°C, only to be followed by thunderstorms in some areas.
The country's been basking in perfect summer weather recently - clear skies, sunshine galore, and comfortable temperatures without any humidity. But things are about to heat up, as a heatwave barrels its way from Spain, through France, right to Germany.
On Saturday, the longest day of the year, the north will see a still manageable 26°C, while the southwest will already be a balmy 33°C. Coastal areas will offer some respite, with a top temp of 23°C.
FYI, Ozone levels are running higher than usual this time of year, causing minor health issues such as coughs and headaches.
Expect temperatures to climb even higher. The hottest day of the year so far is gearing up for a comeback. The current record of 35.5°C from June 14 in Kitzingen could be shattered. By Sunday, temperatures will reach 30 to 34°C, but along the Rhine, it could reach 35 to 37°C, smashing the 2025 record. While it's unlikely to break the all-time record of 39.6°C in Bernburg an der Saale on June 30, 2019, it's still going to be sweltering.
Up to 16 hours of sunshine could be in store from morning till night. These will be the longest sunny days of the year. However, from the afternoon onwards, clouds will start to gather in the west and northwest, and thunderstorms could strike. And that's just the beginning.
By Monday, a low-pressure system from the west will make landfall, pushing the hot air eastward and southeastward. When the cool, moist air from the west meets the heat, it will cause some serious thunderstorms. While it's impossible to pinpoint the exact locations, some regions can be roughly identified. Hail, gusts of wind, and heavy rain could all be on the agenda. In the best-case scenario, there will only be showers or thunder and lightning without any severe repercussions.
After this heatwave, temperatures will drop. In the north, cooler air, wind, and more showers will bring things down to 19°C, while the southeast will still sizzle at 30°C. Similar conditions are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, before temperatures begin to climb again.
Stay cool, Germany! Prepare for heat stress and potential storm disruptions during this period.
