Weather Forecast for Portugal and the Azores: Heatwave Hits Mainland, Cooler Conditions in the Islands

Portugal and the Azores are set to experience different weather patterns over the upcoming weekend and the following week. Mainland Portugal is bracing for a strong heatwave, while the Azores will face cooler, wetter conditions.

Mainland Portugal

A ferocious heatwave is expected across mainland Portugal, with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C or more, particularly in the interior north and center regions. Cities like Vila Real and Bragança face a rare red alert, with highs of 41°C, while many surrounding districts have orange warnings. Overnight lows around 23°C may provide little relief.

Lisbon will have clear skies and high temperatures of 38°C on Saturday and 37°C on Sunday, with some cooling and intermittent clouds from Monday onward. The northern region will be very hot, with highs around 39°C on Saturday and 37°C on Sunday, with temperatures falling to about 32°C by midweek and intermittent cloud cover. The center will experience extreme heat with highs of 41°C on Saturday and 40°C on Sunday, dropping to about 36°C in the following week along with some cloudiness. The southern Algarve region will be the coolest, with highs around 33°C during the weekend and continuing clear skies or intermittent cloud cover, maintaining temperatures around 33°C into the next week.

The Azores

The weekend in the Azores will see easing rain but still heavy cloud cover and a chance of rain, with highs near 27°C. Monday should see slightly clearer skies, but clouds will build again from Tuesday onward. Madeira will have intermittent clouds and highs near 30°C during the weekend, turning clearer on Sunday, with increasing cloud cover after Monday.

In summary, mainland Portugal will face intense heat over the weekend, with some relief and more clouds starting next week, while the Azores will experience cooler, wetter conditions with heavy clouds and occasional rain. On Monday in the Azores, the cloud is to clear slightly before building up again from Tuesday.

The intense heatwave propagating across mainland Portugal will peak on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C in the interior north and center regions, resulting in a red alert for cities like Vila Real and Bragança.

In contrast, the Azores will face cooler conditions over the weekend, characterized by heavy cloud cover, occasional rain, and highs near 27°C. The cloud cover in the Azores will ease slightly on Monday but will build up again from Tuesday.
