Forecast Expects Significant Rainfall Across Several States Within Coming Days; Orange and Red Warnings Activated
===================================================================
In a major weather development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across various regions in India starting May 23, 2025. This monsoon season is expected to continue through late August, with key affected areas including Northwest India, Central India, East and Northeast India, and specific regions such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Konkan, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and the Himalayan foothills.
The forecast is due to a low-pressure area over the East-central Arabian Sea off the Konkan-Goa coast, which is expected to intensify into a depression. This system is projected to move northwards, leading to heavy rainfall over the coming days. Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into the Arabian Sea, especially along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and Gujarat due to rough sea conditions.
The west coast, including Konkan and Goa, is expected to experience intense rainfall between May 22 and 24, with extremely heavy showers in Konkan and Goa. Squally winds and thunderstorms may occur in several areas, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 km/h in some regions.
Southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next five days. Coastal Karnataka may also experience extremely heavy rainfall on May 24.
Parts of North and Northwest India, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, may see intermittent rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. The northeastern region, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and other northeastern states, will experience active rainfall patterns throughout the week, often accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The monsoon rains are caused primarily by multiple weather systems including low-pressure areas and monsoon dynamics. The formation and movement of low-pressure areas and depressions in the Bay of Bengal and inland regions enhance monsoon rainfall. Additionally, monsoon dynamics bring moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, increasing rainfall over northwest, central, east, and northeastern India. Weather systems also lead to thunderstorm activity, gusty winds, and localized heavy to very heavy showers.
Orange and red alerts have been issued for several states, urging residents to take precautions. Rainfall is anticipated to continue over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha until May 26, with possible thunderstorm activity, strong winds, and hail in East Madhya Pradesh.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid traveling on roads where water accumulation is expected. Regular updates on the monsoon conditions will be provided by the IMD.
