Ford Unaware of Reservations Regarding Advancement of Ontario Place Park Construction
The Ontario government has signed a 95-year lease with Therme Group, a Swiss mega-spa builder, for the development of a theme park at Ontario Place. The project, valued at $800 million, is scheduled to begin construction in 2025.
However, the decision to proceed with the theme park development has been met with controversy. Critics argue that the lack of public consultation and potential environmental impacts have not been adequately addressed. In fact, the lease was signed without any public consultation or environmental assessments.
Premier Doug Ford has expressed his confidence in the success of the theme park project, stating that it will be built and will be great. However, his staff are reported to pay close attention to potential issues that could arise from the development.
The theme park project at Ontario Place is the latest in a series of moves by the Ford government that have been criticised as land grabs, including a tunnel under the 401. This decision comes amidst the government's failure to meet housing targets and a high unemployment rate of 700,000 people.
Construction for the theme park has already begun on the west side of the site, with trees being removed. Despite concerns over the funding of the project, Premier Ford stated that he was unaware of any financial concerns.
The development of the theme park at Ontario Place is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, but the controversy surrounding its approval remains a point of contention for many. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how the concerns of the public and the potential environmental impacts are addressed.
