Air-Lifting Criminals Outta Here: Germany Expatriates Offenders to Afghanistan

Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, announces the expulsion of "28 offenders" from the country, with the first deportations to Afghanistan in three years. These relocations are a part of the country's assertive stance on public safety and the rule of law.

Expelled Offenders from Various States

Three individuals from Bavaria were among those expelled, with various charges against them, including sexual misconduct and drug-related offenses. Another CDU migration secretary from Baden-Württemberg proudly announced the deportation of five "serious offenders," including a perpetrator who orchestrated a prolonged sexual assault in Illerkirchberg in 2019.

Similarly, an Afghan national, guilty of several offenses, was expelled from Thuringia. Two Afghan offenders from Saxony-Anhalt, with charges of rape, molestation, and distributing narcotics to minors, were also deported.

Controversial Strategy, Ambiguous Safety

The expulsion of offenders to Afghanistan, governed by the Taliban, has sparked controversies over its compatibility with the German Basic Law and international law. Critics fear violations of human rights in Afghanistan, but Faeser asserts that the Commission has carefully scrutinized each case to confirm that the deported individuals' safety and human rights would not be jeopardized.

Despite the criticisms, several state interior ministers, such as Thorsten Schäfer-Guénther from Schleswig-Holstein, advocate for the deportation of serious offenders and Islamic extremists, emphasizing the import of the Commission's strict guidelines for ensuring offenders' safety and fundamental rights upon return.
