Football's prestigious Ballon d'Or Honors held in 2016

Football superstar Lionel Messi clinches a record fifth FIFA Ballon d'Or trophy, cementing his status as the world's top player, at the January 11 Zurich ceremony. At the same event, American soccer standout Carli Lloyd was ranked as the best women's player.

Football's prestigious Ballon d'Or Honors held in 2016

The 2016 FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards, held in Zurich, Switzerland on January 11, recognised the world's best male and female soccer players for their performances in the year 2016. These individual honours, not team awards, marked a special night in the footballing calendar.

In the men's category, Lionel Messi clinched his record fifth FIFA Ballon d'Or Award, becoming the first player to win it five times. He was followed closely by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was also a finalist for the award, having previously won it in 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2017. Neymar was also among the finalists.

On the women's side, Carli Lloyd was named the best player in the world, winning both the 2016 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Award and the 2016 FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards. Ada Hegerberg, Melissa Herrera, and Lloyd's teammate, Aja Moultrie, were also finalists for the award.

The FIFA FIFPro World11 team for the year 2016 was announced, with Gianluigi Buffon and Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus FC making the cut. Buffon, a renowned goalkeeper, and Bonucci, a versatile defender, were recognised for their outstanding performances throughout the year.

The FIFA Puskás Award for the goal of the year was given to Olivier Giroud for his stunning goal against Crystal Palace. The goal, a powerful overhead kick, showcased the French striker's skill and athleticism.

Antoine Griezmann was a finalist for the 2016 FIFA Ballon d'Or Award, further highlighting the high calibre of players recognised during the ceremony.
