Thomas Müller Joins Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer

Thomas Müller, the renowned German footballer known for his exceptional goal-scoring and unparalleled spatial understanding, has made a move to North America to play football for the Major League Soccer (MLS). Müller, who concluded his 25-year association with Bayern Munich, has signed a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps that will run until the end of 2026, with a Designated Player contract option extending into 2026.

After winning multiple titles, including 13 Bundesliga championships and 2 Champions Leagues, Müller chose Vancouver over other MLS clubs such as LAFC and FC Cincinnati. The move was confirmed after a few weeks of consideration, following the expiration of his contract with FC Bayern.

Müller is the first World Cup Golden Boot winner to join MLS, having won the Golden Boot in the 2010 World Cup and the World Cup itself in 2014. His role as a "Raumdeuter" (space interpreter) promises to make him an effective player even in the later years of his career.

The Vancouver Whitecaps, under the management of Axel Schuster, are a top team in the Western Conference of the MLS and are likely to qualify for the playoffs. The team currently stands second in the Western Conference and recently reached the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final. Under coach Jesper Sørensen, the team has strong goalscoring support from USMNT striker Brian White, and the addition of Müller promises to add significant experience and star power to their lineup.

The MLS boasts a number of big names, including Lionel Messi (Miami), Reus (Los Angeles Galaxy), Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba (all Inter Miami), as well as former French national goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (Los Angeles FC). Müller will play against other aging stars like Messi in the MLS, adding an exciting dimension to the competition.

The move to Canada offers Müller the chance to learn something new, and the Vancouver Whitecaps are excited to have him on board. Vancouver Whitecaps president Axel Schuster described Müller as a world-class player and a natural leader. Müller announced his move to Canada in a video, sitting with his father and brother by the Isar, hinting at his football pension having to wait.

As Müller embarks on this new chapter in his career, he leaves behind a long list of records, including being the first player to celebrate 350 Bundesliga victories and the club's record player with 756 appearances for FC Bayern. FC Bayern hopes to be able to build on the 131-time national player beyond his career.

The MLS is set to be more competitive than ever with the addition of Müller. Timo Baumgartl and Marcel Hartel are part of the large German-speaking contingent at St. Louis City SC, while Roman Bürki, a former BVB goalkeeper, is also part of the St. Louis City SC squad. Kai Wagner is a defender for Philadelphia Union, and Erik Thommy has been playing for Sporting Kansas City for three years.

With the MLS set to have matches against world stars like Messi, the league is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. Müller's move to Canada marks a significant moment in the MLS, as the league continues to attract top-tier talent from around the world.

Sports enthusiasts will be eager to witness Thomas Müller's football skills in the Major League Soccer (MLS), particularly following his remarkable career at Bayern Munich. Due to his move to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Müller will now face off against fellow world-class players like Lionel Messi in the MLS, promising an exciting competitive edge to the league.
