Footballer Chris Maguire Suspended due to Betting Infractions
Rollin' with the Punches: Maguire's Betting Scandal
Maguire's six-week ban for betting on FA matches was officially served, thanks to a clever loophole allowing the start date to be backdated to November 22, 2022.
A Brazen Break of Rules
Originally, Maguire received a £750 fine and a warning from the FA's regulatory commission for breaching the E8 rule, which prohibits betting on any FA matches. However, some charges were appealed by the FA. Maguire's betting on his own teams to win led to the initial charges, totaling over 50 bets from March 2017 to February 2022 during his time at Lincoln City.
During his Lincoln City tenure, the club had no choice but to suspend him. But oddly enough, the charges were reduced to 10 counts, including twice betting on Oxford to win and four bets on Lincoln to win in the 2021-22 season. Maguire admitted or denied the remaining charges, but it had little impact on the final verdict.
Playing with Fire
This scandal came at an inopportune moment for Maguire. He was poised to join Hartlepool United following his suspension from Lincoln. However, Hartlepool's manager, Keith Curle, put the contract on hold, stating that it was only up for re-negotiation after Maguire resolved his gambling allegations.
Sadly, Maguire isn't the only soccer player to face the wrath of betting rules breaches. Brentford's Ivan Toney was charged with over 230 breaches spanning nearly four years, ultimately costing him a spot at the World Cup. York City FC's Joshua King was also under investigation for more than 130 breaches, resulting in a suspension and fine.
Kieran Trippier is another name added to the infamous list of players who have faced similar issues. This pattern of gambling infractions in football seems to be a common pitfall for professional players, unfortunately.
Curiously, despite numerous articles discussing Maguire's recent football performances and other non-betting incidents, there's a dearth of reliable information detailing his betting incidents or their impact on his career. In other words, it seems Maguire dodged a bullet, managing to leave a trail of smoke rather than a mountain of evidence.
