Britain Wins the Davis Cup in 1903, Slater Suffers Season-Ending Injury

In a historic moment for British tennis, the nation clinched the Davis Cup in 1903 by defeating the United States 4-1. This victory marked the first time Britain had won the prestigious tennis competition.

Fast forward to the world of baseball, and we find ourselves in 1931 with Bob Burke pitching a no-hitter for the Washington Senators against the Boston Red Sox, resulting in a 5-0 win. A similar feat was accomplished by Randy Johnson in 1997, as he struck out 19 batters, equalling the major league record for left-handers, in a 5-0 victory for the Seattle Mariners over the Chicago White Sox.

Moving on to more recent times, Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets enjoyed a successful outing in 2018, striking out 10 over six innings and earning his first win in nearly two months. The Mets blanked the Cincinnati Reds 8-0, with Brandon Nimmo tying a team record with three doubles and driving in three runs. DeGrom's impressive performance lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.77.

Meanwhile, in the world of American football, the Los Angeles Chargers have suffered a significant setback with their star left tackle, Rashawn Slater, tearing his patellar tendon. Slater underwent surgery to repair the injury and has been placed on injured reserve, forcing him to miss the entire 2025 season. The Chargers will now have to reshuffle their offensive line, with Joe Alt expected to move to left tackle to fill the gap.

Slater's injury is a blow to the Chargers, who have recently signed him to a $114 million contract extension. His absence will challenge the team's run-heavy offensive strategy under head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, which relies heavily on a strong offensive line.

In baseball news, the Milwaukee Brewers spoiled the debut of San Diego's Brett Kennedy in 2018, with Jesus Aguilar, Travis Shaw, and Eric Thames hitting consecutive first-inning homers in a 8-4 win.

Elsewhere in sports, the Sparks women's basketball team secured a 102-91 victory over the Connecticut Sun, their eighth win in nine games. Matthew Stafford, the Rams' quarterback, is set to throw passes on Saturday at the team's Woodland Hill facility.

In other notable sports events, Damion Easley went 6-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs as Detroit pounded Texas 19-6 in 2001. Howard Ehmke pitched a 5-0 no-hitter for the Detroit Tigers against the Boston Red Sox in 1920. Philadelphia's Gavy Cravath hit four doubles and drove in eight runs in a 14-7 victory over the Reds at Cincinnati in 1915. Orlando Cepeda hit four doubles as the Boston Red Sox posted a 9-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals in 1973.

The Little League team from Honolulu won 4-1 against Fullerton Golden Hill and will travel to Williamsport, Pa., for the World Series. In a memorable Davis Cup match in 1903, Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity of the New York Giants won a double victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers, scoring a double victory in games 1 and 2 with scores of 6-1 and 4-3 respectively. He also stole home in the second game.

Brandon Crawford became the first major league player in 41 years to get seven hits in a game in 2016, putting the San Francisco Giants ahead to stay with an RBI single in the 14th inning of an 8-7 victory over the Miami Marlins. The injury to Slater occurred during team drills against edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu.
