St. Henry Crusaders Kick Off Inaugural Varsity Season
The St. Henry Crusaders are gearing up for their historic first varsity football season, with the season opener against Holy Cross scheduled for August 22 at home. This marks a significant milestone for the 91-year-old co-ed Catholic school in Erlanger, Kentucky, as they embark on a new chapter in their athletic history.
The Crusaders' offensive line is still a work in progress, but the team is making strides as they prepare for their first varsity game, which is now just 12 days away. The team played their first scrimmage game on Saturday morning, providing an opportunity to test their mettle against another team.
The Crusaders' schedule includes five consecutive district seeding games, setting the stage for a potential run in the Class 2A playoffs. Ryne Ravenscraft, a junior, took the reins as quarterback for the first-team offense in Saturday's scrimmage, while sophomore Luca Pate served as the primary ball carrier.
Caden Kunstek, one of four senior co-captains on the St. Henry roster, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance against a more experienced team. However, Kunstek, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound wide receiver and cornerback, was one of five seniors on the sideline recovering from injuries during the scrimmage.
Coach Tim Odom is optimistic about the team's prospects, believing that as long as the coaches continue to do their job effectively, the team will improve. Will Miller, considered the team's best defensive player at linebacker, is one of the seniors on the roster, along with Brennan Lemmond, Gunnar Ditrick, Gabe Larkins, and another senior named Will Miller.
Ryne Ravenscraft, who had never played quarterback until last year, was seen leading the team in the scrimmage. The Crusaders will play a scrimmage game against Holmes this coming Friday, offering another opportunity to fine-tune their strategies before the big game against Holy Cross.
