Atlanta Braves Part Ways with Kicker Younghoe Koo, Promote Parker Romo

The Atlanta Braves have made a significant change in their kicking unit, letting go of Younghoe Koo and promoting Parker Romo to take over the role.

Younghoe Koo, who had been with the Braves since 2019, has been released by the team. This decision comes after Koo missed a 44-yard game-tying kick in the final seconds of Atlanta's Week 1 loss. The Braves will take on $1.25 million in dead money this year by releasing Koo, but will save $4.25 million towards the salary cap.

Koo's career with the Braves has been marked by success and disappointment. He has a record of 178-of-205 on field goal attempts, including an impressive 11-of-16 on attempts that would've tied a game or taken the lead in the final minute of a game. Koo had a Pro Bowl season in 2020, but his performance dipped in 2024, where he converted just 25 of 34 field goal attempts (73.5% success rate).

In a post on Instagram, Koo expressed his gratitude towards the Braves organization and fans. He wrote, "I want to thank the Braves organization and the fans for the opportunity to play in Atlanta. It has been an honour to be a part of this team and I am grateful for the support I've received."

With Koo out of the picture, the Braves have turned to Parker Romo. Romo, who was signed to the practice squad following the loss in Week 1, has impressed in his short time with the team. He was 5-for-5 in Sunday's win over the Minnesota Vikings and has now been signed to the 53-man roster, making him the team's starting kicker.

The Braves will face the Carolina Panthers this Sunday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET. As they move forward with Romo at kicker, the Braves will be hoping for a stronger performance from their kicking unit in the upcoming games.
