Atlanta Falcons Part Ways with Veteran Kicker Younghoe Koo
The Atlanta Falcons have made a surprising move, releasing veteran kicker Younghoe Koo after a seven-season tenure with the team. The decision comes following a decline in accuracy and a missed field goal in the season opener.
Younghoe Koo, who joined the Falcons in 2019, departs as the third all-time leading scorer with 700 points, trailing only Matt Bryant and Morten Andersen. Koo was a Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and was one of the NFL's most reliable kickers during his tenure with the Falcons. In the 2020 season, he led the league with 37 made field goals on 39 attempts, boasting a field-goal success rate of 73.5%.
Koo was inactive for the Falcons' last game and did not travel with the team. His last field-goal attempt for the Falcons was a missed 44-yard try in Week 1 of the 2022 season. In his absence, Parker Romo stepped up, going 5-for-5 on field goals, including a 54-yarder.
The Falcons have since signed Romo to a two-year deal and confirmed that he will start Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Romo expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "I am full of gratitude and excitement as I continue my journey in the league."
Younghoe Koo, 31, wished the Falcons organization the best in a heartfelt post on Instagram. He expressed gratitude for his time with the team and the fans, stating, "I am thankful for the memories and the love you have shown me."
As Koo embarks on a new chapter in his career, the Falcons will look to Romo to provide a steady hand in the kicking game. Romo's strong debut and impressive preseason performance have given the team confidence in his abilities.
The Falcons and Romo will face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, as the team looks to bounce back from a tough start to the season.
