Football team the Browns have confirmed that Shedeur Sanders could potentially start at this week's game against the Eagles, with his presence on the field.
The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for their preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and the quarterback competition is heating up.
Rookie Dillon Gabriel was expected to start the game, marking his first start and an opportunity to showcase his abilities despite injury concerns. Gabriel, a third-round pick from Oregon, had participated in some 11-on-11 drills on Monday, but his participation does not indicate he has been cleared to start the preseason game.
Joe Flacco, the most likely starter for the Browns when the regular season begins, did not play in the preseason opener. Flacco had taken the majority of first-team reps due to injuries to Kenny Pickett (hamstring), Dillon Gabriel (hamstring), and Shedeur Sanders (oblique). Pickett is behind health-wise compared to Gabriel, and his health status is a factor in the competition to be Cleveland's QB1.
Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round pick, generated significant buzz with a two-TD performance in the preseason opener. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards in a 30-10 win against the Carolina Panthers. Sanders is in the mix to start the preseason game at Philadelphia.
Kevin Stefanski, the Browns' head coach, has not yet named a starter for the preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Stefanski plans to determine Cleveland's QB1 before the third preseason game on Aug. 23 against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Browns have decided to give Sanders reps in the upcoming game, but his playing time may be during the second half, depending on the available players. Sanders' performance against the Panthers has shown that he is capable of stepping up when given the opportunity.
The 2022 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles will provide a chance for Gabriel and others to prove themselves behind Flacco. The competition for the starting quarterback role is still up in the air, and the preseason games will be crucial in determining who will lead the Browns when the regular season begins.
With the regular season opener against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7, the Browns have a lot to play for in the preseason. The quarterback competition will be a key factor in the team's success this season, and fans will be eager to see how the competition unfolds.
