Buffalo Bills Running Back James Cook Secures $48 Million Extension
The Buffalo Bills have sealed a significant deal with running back James Cook, agreeing to a four-year, $48 million extension. This contract includes a substantial $30 million guaranteed, making it the highest guarantee for a running back in the past five years.
Cook, who turned 25 this year, has been a key player for the Bills, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. In 2024, he led the team with 207 carries, 1,009 rushing yards, and an impressive 16 rushing touchdowns, equalling O.J. Simpson's franchise record.
The new deal, which runs through the 2029 season, sees Cook's average annual value (AAV) increase from about $5.271 million to $12 million per year in new money. This places Cook among the top-tier running backs in the NFL, surpassing the recent $11 million AAV signed by Kyren Williams of the Los Angeles Rams.
Notably, the Bills have secured the contracts of six key players during this offseason, with Cook joining quarterback Josh Allen, wide receiver Khalil Shakir, cornerback Christian Benford, defensive end Gregory Rousseau, and linebacker Terrell Bernard in their long-term plans.
Cook returned to practice on Tuesday after a brief hold-in, ready to contribute to the Bills' offensive strategy for the upcoming season. With this extension, he solidifies his role as a crucial offensive weapon for the team.
