Nigerian Football Club Barau FC Secures Promotion to NPFL, Faces Stadium Challenges

Barau FC, a Nigerian football club founded and sponsored by Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, has made history by securing promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for the first time at the end of the 2024/2025 season. This achievement marks the first time Kano State has two teams in Nigeria's top-flight league.

The club, established with the goal of reducing youth unemployment and aspiring to develop into a global brand, has been the recipient of Senator Jibrin's support. This support includes the recent gift of 35 brand-new motorcycles and ₦17.5 million to the players following Barau FC's promotion. Each player received a motorcycle and ₦500,000 in cash as a reward and motivation.

However, Barau FC's debut NPFL campaign is threatened by stadium issues. Their initial ground, Dambatta Stadium, does not meet NPFL standards. Their attempt to access the 18,000-capacity Sani Abacha Stadium has been delayed by a demand from the Kano State Government for a ₦50 million fee. This situation could disrupt their NPFL campaign, indicating struggles off the pitch as the club seeks stability and growth within Nigeria’s top football league.

Despite these challenges, Barau FC has already reinforced its squad with 25 fresh signings, including some players not from Nigeria. The club's new head coach, Ladan Bosso, was officially unveiled at a reception held in Kano on Tuesday.

Barau Jibrin, the club's founder, described Ladan Bosso as the best and highlighted that football offers economic opportunities. His goal is to take the players to the international stage, with some players possibly aspiring to play for clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Barau FC sealed their spot in the NPFL last month after a 2-0 victory over Doma United in their final playoff clash. The club's success is a victory for the Nigerian youth, according to Senator Jibrin. He created a platform for the players to excel in soccer and emphasised that this platform is a stepping stone to greater opportunities.

In preparation for their NPFL campaign, Barau FC will play a pre-season friendly against El-Kanemi Warriors on Wednesday. Their first NPFL challenge will be a high-profile home fixture against nine-time champions Enyimba at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. This match promises to be an exciting start to Barau FC's journey in the NPFL.
