Football superstar Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team officially agree on extending his contract past the year 2026.
Lionel Messi Set to Extend Stay in Major League Soccer
Lionel Messi, the footballing legend who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, is poised to continue his MLS journey beyond the 2026 World Cup. An official announcement about the contract extension is expected within the next two weeks.
Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023 after a stint at Paris Saint-Germain, has been a revelation in the MLS. He broke records last year, becoming the fastest player to reach 40 goals in MLS history. His impressive form continued this season, as he was named the MLS Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season.
Messi's goal-scoring prowess was also on display in the South American qualifiers, where he finished as the top scorer with eight goals. This form helped Argentina comfortably qualify for the 2026 World Cup, finishing nine points clear at the top of the qualifying table.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico, with the tournament starting on June 11 and the final on July 19. Messi, who is three goals short of Miroslav Klose's record of 16 career World Cup goals, could play at a sixth World Cup next year, setting a new potential record.
Messi has expressed a desire to retain the World Cup trophy in 2026. Inter Miami, however, have had a challenging run in cup competitions, with the team being thrashed 4-0 in the last 16 of the Club World Cup by Paris Saint-Germain and also going down 3-0 to Seattle Sounders in the final of the Leagues Cup.
Despite these setbacks, Inter Miami find themselves in a strong position in the Eastern Conference, sitting in sixth place and well-positioned to qualify for the play-offs. With Messi at the helm, the future looks bright for the club.
Prior to joining Inter Miami, Messi spent a significant part of his career at Barcelona, where he won the La Liga title 10 times and the UEFA Champions League four times. His move to the MLS marked a new chapter in his illustrious career, and it seems he is set to end it in the MLS as well.
If the announcement is made, Messi may end his career in the MLS, continuing his legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time in North America.
