Football stardom in 'HIM' comes with a heavy toll. Tyriq Withers is its emerging talent.
In the world of Hollywood, exciting news is brewing as Tyriq Withers prepares to star in the upcoming romantic drama, "Reminders of Him". Based on Colleen Hoover's bestselling novel, this film promises to be a captivating journey.
The story revolves around Cameron Cade, an NFL rookie with starry-eyed dreams, played by Withers. His character is sent to train with Isaiah White, a fading football idol, portrayed by the multi-hyphenate Hollywood legend, Marlon Wayans.
Isaiah White calls a creepy Brutalist compound in the desert his home, adding an eerie twist to the narrative. The movie, titled "HIM", is said to be a scathing critique of how professional sports capitalize upon the bodies and minds of Black athletes, much like Jordan Peele's acclaimed horror film, Get Out.
Marlon Wayans, known for his work in the Scary Movie franchise, among many other films, shows, and comedy specials, has encouraged Withers to hone his skills as a writer and producer to ensure a long and successful career in the industry.
Withers, born in Jacksonville, Florida, has credited Marlon Wayans for providing him with books on screenwriting, including Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder, Story by Robert McKee, Myth and the Movies by Stuart Voytilla, The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler, and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces. These books are renowned works in the field of screenwriting and storytelling.
In a 2022 episode of the TV show Atlanta, Withers showcased his acting prowess by playing a light-skinned, mixed-race high school student passing as white. This role was a stark contrast to his upcoming role in "Reminders of Him", a story that delves into love, grief, forgiveness, and motherhood.
Withers, who was a college athlete in real life, playing as a wide receiver for Florida State, found making "Reminders of Him" scarier than the football horror film HIM. He attributed this to the vulnerability involved in portraying such a complex and emotionally charged character.
Marlon Wayans, who has been in the entertainment industry for 35-plus years, attributes his longevity to being proactive, writing roles, producing, and creating TV shows. With the guidance of such a seasoned professional, "Reminders of Him" is sure to be a compelling addition to Withers' growing resume.
As we eagerly await the release of "Reminders of Him", it's clear that Tyriq Withers is set to make a significant impact in the world of film and entertainment. Copyright 2025 NPR.
