Thomas Müller Joins Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Major League Soccer
Thomas Müller, the world-class German footballer known for his outstanding goal-scoring ability and unmatched spatial awareness, has moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) by signing with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Canada.
After spending almost a quarter of a century with FC Bayern Munich, Müller officially joined Vancouver in August 2025. He will play for the remainder of the 2025 season with a Designated Player option for 2026.
The transfer involved Vancouver acquiring Müller's Discovery Rights from FC Cincinnati in exchange for General Allocation Money, a form of MLS salary budget trading, totaling up to $400,000. Müller, often referred to as a "Raumdeuter" (interpreter of space), brings exceptional chance creation and spatial awareness to the Whitecaps, who are pursuing titles in MLS and Canadian competitions.
Müller, who holds the record for the most competitive games played for FC Bayern with a total of 756, has expressed enthusiasm about his new club and city. He stated, "I am coming to Vancouver to win titles, and I am excited to contribute to the team’s success." This signing is seen as a transformative moment for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, signalling their ambition to compete at the highest level.
Müller's move to MLS offers him the chance to face off against global superstars like Lionel Messi, Marco Reus, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. His former Dortmund teammate, Marco Reus, welcomed him to the MLS, expressing his excitement for their potential on-field encounters.
Vancouver is not the only city in the MLS with a German-speaking presence. Timo Baumgartl, Marcel Hartel, Roman Bürki, Kai Wagner, and Erik Thommy are among the German-speaking players currently in the league. Müller's move to Canada also presents an opportunity to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which Canada will co-host with Mexico and the USA.
Müller started his football journey at TSV Pähl before joining Bayern Munich's youth academy. His career has been marked by major triumphs, including being the first player to celebrate 350 Bundesliga wins. FC Bayern hopes to be able to build on Müller even after his career, with many functionaries and fans wishing for his return in a leading position. Bayern Munich bid him farewell with the words "We wish you all the best, legend!"
As Müller embarks on this new chapter in his career, he is eager to make a significant impact in the MLS and help the Vancouver Whitecaps FC achieve their goal of winning titles. With his exceptional skills and unmatched work ethic, fans can expect nothing less.
