Football powerhouse Jérôme Boateng announces his retirement from professional play.
Former Bayern Munich and German National Team Star Jérôme Boateng Retires from Professional Football
Jérôme Boateng, a renowned figure in the world of football, has announced his retirement from professional football. The German defender, who won numerous accolades throughout his illustrious career, made the announcement on his social media platforms.
Boateng's career began in 2007 when he made his Bundesliga debut for Hertha BSC. However, it was his move to Bayern Munich in 2011 that propelled him to international stardom. During his tenure with the Bavarian giants, Boateng won nine Bundesliga titles and five DFB-Pokals, as well as two Champions League titles and the 2014 World Cup with the German national team.
In 2016, Boateng was named Germany's Footballer of the Year, a testament to his exceptional performances on the pitch. However, his career took a different turn in 2021 when he left Bayern Munich and embarked on a journey that saw him play for Olympique Lyon in France, US Salernitana in Italy, and Linzer ASK in Austria.
Boateng's time with Linzer ASK was cut short when he terminated his contract in August 2022, after just 14 official matches. Despite this, he expressed gratitude for the enriching experience of working with the Austrian club in a statement.
Before his retirement, Boateng obtained his UEFA B coaching license in November 2024 through a special course organized by the Bavarian Football Association (BFV). The defender admitted to being "naturally a bit nervous" before the exam, but his extensive experience and passion for the game no doubt played a significant role in his success.
Boateng's career was marked by numerous highs, including the memorable encounter with his half-brother Kevin-Prince Boateng at the 2010 World Cup, where they faced off against each other with Germany and Ghana, respectively.
In a heartfelt video featuring highlights of his career, Boateng expressed gratitude for everything football has brought him. As he hangs up his boots, he leaves behind a legacy of success and a lasting impact on the game of football.
