Victor Cruz's Season Ended by Calf Injury, Surgery Ahead

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has suffered a setback in his comeback bid, as he will undergo season-ending surgery on his left calf. The injury, which occurred on August 17, has kept Cruz sidelined since.

Cruz has been attempting to return to practice since September 30, but was unable to complete early drills. He has undergone two platelet-rich plasma injections since the initial injury, but the surgery and recovery timetable are not specified.

The news comes as a disappointment for Cruz, who expressed his excitement about being a part of something special this year and being a special player individually. He stated that he felt he was back to 100% before the calf injury.

In a statement made through the website Uninterrupted, Cruz said, "I'm going to retool my brain and body to deal with overcoming this calf injury." He added, "I'm excited for the challenge of returning at 100% and want to really attack this thing and really come out the other end firing."

The Giants initially discussed putting Cruz on injured reserve with a designation to return, but decided to wait due to the medical staff's assessment that he would likely miss no more than eight weeks. However, in hindsight, general manager Jerry Reese admitted that the team should have put Cruz on injured reserve earlier.

Cruz has three years remaining on his contract with the Giants, with a base salary of $7.9 million in 2016 and $15.8 combined in 2017 and 2018. If the Giants were to cut Cruz this upcoming offseason, they would save $6.1 million against the salary cap.

Quarterback Eli Manning expressed his disappointment for Cruz, saying, "It's unfortunate for him to have a nagging calf injury after working hard to come back from a knee injury last year." The much-heralded return of Cruz will not take place this year.

As Cruz prepares for surgery and recovery, the Giants may renegotiate his contract for a lower base salary or cut him and allow him to sign elsewhere as a free agent. Cruz's calf injury has kept him out of action for almost two full seasons, and the team will need to consider their options moving forward.
