Football player Keenan Allen re-signs with the Chargers for a single-year contract
After spending the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears, veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen is returning to his former team, the Los Angeles Chargers, on a one-year contract worth $8.52 million for the 2025 season.
Allen, aged 33, ranks third among active NFL players with 974 career receptions and sixth with 11,274 career receiving yards. In his time with the Chargers, Allen has been a consistent force in the team's passing offense, earning six Pro Bowl selections and ranking third on the Chargers' career receiving touchdowns list with 59.
Last season, while with the Bears, Allen had 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns. Although these numbers were his lowest since his rookie season, the Chargers are confident that Allen's presence will help enhance their passing game as they pursue a Super Bowl.
The Chargers have over $32 million in cap space for 2025, so signing Allen did not significantly affect their salary cap flexibility. If Allen's salary is fully guaranteed, he would be the third-highest paid player on the Chargers behind quarterback Justin Herbert ($15 million) and safety Derwin James ($13.75 million).
Allen's preference to only play in Chicago or Los Angeles may have helped the Chargers secure this deal. The team announced Allen's return on Tuesday evening.
Throughout his career with the Chargers, Allen has had five occasions where he collected 100 or more catches, with a team-record of 108 in 2023. He ranks second in Chargers history with 904 receptions and second in receiving yards with 10,530.
Allen's return to the Chargers marks his first season outside of the Los Angeles Chargers since 2012. During his tenure with the Chargers from 2013-23, he was a consistent force in the team's passing offense, earning six Pro Bowl selections and ranking third on the Chargers' career receiving touchdowns list with 59.
Meanwhile, NFL Network reported that Allen has agreed to a one-year, $8.52 million deal with the Chargers. The details of the contract, such as guaranteed money or incentives, have not been publicly disclosed.
Allen will join a talented Chargers offense that includes Herbert, running back Austin Ekeler, and tight end Gerald Everett. The team is hopeful that Allen's return will help them take a step closer to achieving their goal of a Super Bowl victory.
