Football player from Brazil dismissed for relieving himself in a bottle on the sidelines
In the world of professional soccer, incidents involving players leaving the pitch for unconventional reasons are rare. However, two such occurrences made headlines recently, with one involving Lucas Souza, a striker for Metropolitano in the Brazilian second tier, and another involving Eric Dier, a defender for Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
Lucas Souza's case is particularly noteworthy as he was shown a straight red card during a match for urinating into a bottle on the bench[1]. This unusual incident occurred during the first leg of the Santa Catarina Championship Serie B semi-finals against Carlos Renaux. The referee, Adriano Roberto de Souza, was alerted to the incident by the fourth official, Ruan Alessandro Kanitz.
On the other side of the globe, Eric Dier, a key player for Tottenham Hotspur, sprinted off the pitch during a match against Chelsea in the 2020 Carabao Cup fourth round tie. The incident occurred with 15 minutes remaining in the game, with Spurs a goal down. Dier later explained that "Nature was calling" and that he couldn't help but leave the pitch when the need arose[2].
Jose Mourinho, Tottenham's manager, commented that Dier's departure was "easy to imagine what happened" and that he was not playing in the subsequent match due to playing two matches while dehydrated and tired. Mourinho also expressed concern about Dier's health, stating that he would "definitely kill" him if he played in the next match[3].
Dier returned to the pitch in the shoot-out, where he scored the deciding goal after Erik Lamela's late equaliser, securing a victory for Tottenham. In a humorous twist, Dier posted a picture of his Man of the Match award on the toilet with the caption 'The real M.O.M'.
It is important to note that these incidents were not repetitions of the Lucas Souza urination incident or the 2009 Jens Lehmann urination incident, as they involved different players and teams, and occurred in different competitions[4][5].
