Pogon Szczecin, a historic club in Poland with a 7th best record in the country, has made a significant signing in the form of World Cup champion Benjamin Mendy. The 31-year-old French defender has joined the club for one year, plus an option, as they look to fill the void left by the departure of their top scorer, Efthymis Koulouris, who moved to Saudi Arabia.

Mendy, a 2018 World Cup winner, has had a tumultuous career in recent years, with this being his third club since his enforced break from football due to legal issues. Before joining Pogon Szczecin, he played for Lorient and FC Zurich, where he failed to impress his coach, Ricardo Moniz, who stated that Mendy did not deliver what was expected from a player of his calibre.

Pogon Szczecin's current league position of 9th is lower than their 4th place finish in the previous season, and the club has never won a trophy since its creation, earning it a bad reputation in the country. The departure of Koulouris, who scored 28 goals in the 2024-2025 season, has undoubtedly affected the team's performance, and the club is currently struggling to fill the void left by his departure.

The club has participated in the UEFA Europa Conference League in its first three editions (2021-2024), but did not qualify for a European competition this season. The coach of Pogon Szczecin, Robert Kolendowicz, has been the manager since August 15, 2024.

Mendy will reunite with Kamil Grosicki, a former Ligue 1 player, at Pogon Szczecin. Lukas Podolski, another World Cup champion, has been playing in the Polish league since 2021.

Despite its historical status, Pogon Szczecin has yet to win a trophy in its existence. The club has spent 53 seasons in the Polish elite, but has not been able to secure any silverware. Mendy will be hoping to change this and help the club achieve its first-ever trophy.

As Mendy looks to rebuild his career at Pogon Szczecin, the club will be hoping that his experience and talent can help them improve their league position and challenge for trophies in the future.
