In Greenville, Mississippi, the community grapples with a surge in violent crimes, most notably a fatal shooting that claimed the life of Baylor University defensive lineman Alex Foster early on Wednesday. The local coroner's office confirmed the tragic incident to The Associated Press. Foster was 18 years old.

The shooting incident marks a concerning trend in Greenville, with Mayor Errick D. Simmons expressing alarm, stating that the city has seen multiple shootings and senseless killings. The mayor imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in an attempt to curb the violence. Nightclubs and late-night establishments are required to cease operations at midnight as part of the curfew, with a special emphasis on juvenile safety and parental accountability.

Greenville Police reported that officers responded to a call about a shooting in a residential/commercial area of the city shortly after midnight. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. The victim was transported to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries approximately 30 to 40 minutes later. No arrests have been made, and authorities are seeking information regarding the shooting.

The Mississippi Clarion Ledger first reported on the shooting, citing Alex Foster as the victim. Greenville Police Spokeswoman Major Misty Mew confirmed the incident but did not disclose the victim's name at the time.

Following the news of Foster's death, Baylor University issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and offering support to the late football player's family and teammates. Head coach Dave Aranda and Athletic Director Mack Rhodes said, "We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a cherished member of our football family. Our immediate focus is on assisting Alex's family and his teammates during this devastating time."

Foster participated in spring practices and was set to begin his freshman season after redshirting last year. He was a highly-rated prospect from St. Joseph High School in Madison, Mississippi, and had been listed at 6-foot-5 and 292 pounds.
