Football manager Ryan Giggs, aged 51, relinquishes duties at Salford City as he pursues a fresh opportunity in a managerial job at Manchester United.
Ryan Giggs Steps Down as Salford City Director of Football, Pursues New Managerial Role
Ryan Giggs, the legendary Manchester United player, has announced his departure from his role as Director of Football at League Two club Salford City. The 51-year-old is now expressing interest in a return to management.
Giggs had been assisting Salford City's boss, Karl Robinson, on matchdays, and was previously involved in the day-to-day operations at the club. He joined Salford City in 2014, when he, along with Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, and Phil Neville, were bought out by David Beckham and Gary Neville in the club's takeover.
However, Giggs missed the Euro 2020 finals after he stood down from his post following his arrest on suspicion of assault in November 2020. A retrial was abandoned because the alleged victim, Kate Greville, was unwilling to give evidence. Jurors failed to reach a verdict on subsequent assault charges as well as those of coercive or controlling behavior.
Giggs admitted it was heartbreaking not to lead Wales at the Euros, which were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He had been the manager of Wales and qualified his country for Euro 2020. However, he was replaced by Robert Page following the allegations.
Meanwhile, Giggs has also missed out on a Premier League Hall of Fame nomination this month. Troy Deeney criticized the selection process for the Hall of Fame last Saturday. The Prem has announced they will change the voting system for the Hall of Fame in future, with the final say shifting from fans to existing Hall of Fame members.
New nominees for the Premier League Hall of Fame include Gary Neville, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, and Teddy Sheringham. Giggs, despite his recent setbacks, still gets as excited as ever on matchday and is eager to return to management.
As Giggs seeks a new managerial role, the football world will be watching to see where his next chapter takes him.
