Football manager Jose Mourinho makes entrance at Benfica in stylish Ferrari, days prior to emotional reunion at Chelsea as newly appointed manager
Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as the new manager of Portuguese Primeira Liga side Benfica, following the dismissal of Bruno Lage. The news comes after the Eagles suffered a 3-2 defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Mourinho, who became available as a manager after being sacked by Fenerbahce at the end of August, arrived in Lisbon this afternoon to take up his new role. He has penned a two-year deal with the club, with an option to end 10 days after the final game of the 2025-26 season.
Benfica were linked with a swoop for Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim last week, but the Eagles instead opted for Mourinho. Nuno Gomes, a close friend of Joao Noronha Lopes - a candidate to become the next president of Benfica - recently stated that Amorim will be the coach of Benfica one day.
Benfica are currently sixth in the Primeira Liga table with 10 points from four games. The defeat to Qarabag has put pressure on the club to make a change, and the appointment of Mourinho is seen as a bold move to turn their fortunes around.
Joao Noronha Lopes, who was presented as a strong candidate for the presidency of Benfica, has shown the ability to change the club and make it greater in recent years. He has revealed his intention to bring Bernardo Silva back to Lisbon in January, and he had planned to invite Amorim as Mourinho’s successor.
Mourinho is no stranger to success in Portugal, having previously managed Porto and Real Madrid. He is expected to bring his wealth of experience and winning mentality to Benfica, and fans will be eager to see how he fares in his new role.
As Mourinho prepares to take charge of his first press conference in a black Ferrari with a police escort, it is clear that the Portuguese side are making a statement with their new appointment. Only time will tell if Mourinho can deliver the success that Benfica fans are craving.
