Felix Magath, a renowned figure in German football, has taken up a new challenge in the lower leagues. The former VfB Stuttgart coach and successful manager, who recently failed in his bid to become president of Hamburger SV (HSV), has joined Viktoria Aschaffenburg, a club competing in the Regionalliga Bayern (the fourth tier of German football).
Magath, who was born in Aschaffenburg in 1953, is returning to his hometown for this new role. He started his footballing journey with TV 1860 Aschaffenburg before moving to Viktoria Aschaffenburg for two years in 1972.
Magath's career has been both in Germany and abroad, with notable successes as a player with Hamburger SV, winning Bundesliga titles and European trophies, as well as 43 caps for West Germany and a Euro 1980 win. As a manager, he has achieved Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg and had stints in Germany and England, including Fulham. Known for his strict discipline and training methods, Magath announced in 2020 that he would step back from coaching to contribute to football in other ways.
Magath's new role with Viktoria Aschaffenburg is not as a coach but as a sporting director. The club hopes to benefit from his extensive experience in top-tier football to support their development and ambitions within German football's fourth tier. Magath's new role was announced on Saturday by Viktoria Aschaffenburg, marking a shift from his previous high-profile managerial roles to working at a lower league level.
This move comes after Magath's failed bid to become HSV president in 2025. Speculations about roles at HSV and Hertha BSC did not materialize, leading Magath to find a new opportunity with Viktoria Aschaffenburg. A confirmation of his position will be made at a members' meeting later this year.
