Football legend D.D. Lewis, known for his outstanding career with the Cowboys, has passed away at the age of 79.

In a heartfelt social media post, Mississippi State University paid tribute to D.D. Lewis, a Bulldog legend who spent three seasons at the university before embarking on a storied professional career. According to the Dallas Cowboys, Lewis passed away at the age of 79.

Lewis, a college star at Mississippi State, was a second-team All-American in 1966 and a first-team All-American in 1967. He was also the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1967. His impressive college football career culminated in his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lewis' college coach, Paul E. Davis, who guided him to the Hall of Fame, was the head coach during Lewis' Mississippi State career (1965-67).

Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 1968 draft, Lewis played weakside linebacker for 13 seasons. He started 132 of 134 regular-season games between 1973-81 and appeared in five Super Bowls, earning two championship rings.

Lewis' postseason career was impressive, with a club-record 27 games played. He had four interceptions in his postseason career and eight career interceptions in 186 games.

The Cowboys reached the playoffs in 12 of Lewis' 13 seasons, a testament to his consistent performance.

Sadly, another member of the Dallas Cowboys' 'Doomsday Defense', Lee Roy Jordan, passed away on Aug. 30.

Lewis, born in Knoxville, Tenn., will be remembered as a Bulldog legend and a key contributor to the Dallas Cowboys' success in the 1970s and 1980s. His legacy will live on in the hearts of fans and the annals of football history.
