Vela, a World Champion with the Mexican National Sub-17 Team in 2005, never played in the Mexican First Division. Post the tournament, he was purchased by Arsenal, who sent him for development to Salamanca and Osasuna in Spain.
In 2008, he played with the Gunners before moving to West Bromwich and Real Sociedad, where he became an idol until his shift to the MLS in 2018. He represented Mexico in the World Cups of 2010 and 2018.
