Jerome Boateng Bids Farewell to Football After Illustrious Career

Jerome Boateng, the 37-year-old centre-back, announced his retirement from football on Friday, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned over two decades. Boateng, who spent the latter part of his career playing for Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and LASK in Austria, rose to prominence as a key player for Bayern Munich.

Born and raised in Berlin, Boateng began his football journey with the Hertha Berlin academy. His half brother, Kevin-Prince, who is a year his senior, also came through the same academy. Boateng's professional career took off after brief spells at Hamburg and Manchester City, but it was with Bayern Munich where he truly made his mark.

Boateng joined Bayern in 2011 and went on to win nine Bundesliga titles with the club, as well as two Champions League titles in 2013 and 2020. His international career was equally impressive, with 76 appearances for the German national team, scoring once.

Throughout his career, Boateng expressed gratitude towards the teams, fans, and people who supported him. However, late in his career, he was involved in a trial relating to domestic violence allegations made by his ex-wife. Following a review process, Boateng received a warning and a suspended fine.

In his farewell message on social media, Boateng expressed particular gratitude towards his family and children. He stated that he is leaving football not because he has to, but because he is ready. His career highlights were included in a clip uploaded alongside his message.

Boateng's departure from LASK in mid-August marked the end of his playing days. As he hangs up his boots, Boateng leaves behind a legacy of success and resilience, and will be remembered as one of the greats of German football.
