Poulter, a former football player who was once banned for three years due to a doping violation, was sat behind the visiting dugout. He goaded Simeone, which led to a heated exchange. Simeone, in a move that shocked everyone, ran over to where Poulter was sitting.
However, Poulter claims that Simeone's assistant coach spat at him during the altercation. Simeone, on the other hand, has remained silent on the matter, abruptly walking out of his post-match press conference without answering questions about the incident.

Higham felt threatened and intimidated by Poulter, who had been cautioned in 2013 for attempting to take smoke pellets into a game at Wigan.
In a surprising turn of events, Poulter apologised to Higham and his wife at the first home game the following season and shook his hand. Despite this, the incident cast a shadow over what was meant to be a celebration of Gerrard's career.
The banner, which blocked disabled supporters sitting in the Kop from seeing the players walk out for Gerrard's Anfield farewell, added to the controversy of the day.
