The upcoming football season promises an exciting battle for promotion and relegation in the Lower Rhine region. The fate of several teams in the Oberliga and Landesliga hinges on the number of teams relegated from the Regionalliga West, the fourth-highest league in Germany.

In the District Leagues, a fixed three relegation spots exist in each group, with the champion being promoted to the Regionalliga. To determine additional promotion spots, a three-game round consisting of two matches is played among the six runners-up.

The Oberliga and the two Landesligen in the Lower Rhine region will remain attached to the relegation teams from the Regionalliga for the 2025/26 season. The number of relegated teams from the Regionalliga West can have a significant impact on the promotion and relegation in the Oberliga and Landesliga.

More relegated teams from the Regionalliga could lead to more teams being relegated from the Oberliga to the Landesliga. Conversely, the number of promotion spots from Oberliga to Regionalliga may depend on licensing and if sufficient spots are available.

Typically, three to five teams are relegated from the Regionalliga West to the Oberliga Niederrhein. However, the exact number for the 2025/26 season has yet to be confirmed by the Westdeutscher Fußballverband (WDFV), the governing body for the Regionalliga West and lower leagues.

As the season draws closer, official announcements from the WDFV or the league’s official website will provide precise rules on the number of relegated teams and the resulting consequences on the promotion and relegation chain in lower leagues.

Meanwhile, the District League players have a clearer view of the new season due to the additional promotions from the Kreisliga A balancing out the fluctuating number of relegation teams from the Landesliga. The VfB Homberg, SV Sonsbeck, SV Scherpenberg, 1. FC Lintfort, SV Budberg, and GSV Moers are some of the teams involved in the Oberliga and Landesliga.

In the District League, Group 1 is Düsseldorf/Neuss, Group 3 is Mönchengladbach/Krefeld with VfL Tönisberg, Group 4 includes Borussia Veen and TuS Xanten from Moers, and Group 5 consists of FC Neukirchen-Vluyn, VfL Repelen, TuS Asterlagen, and VfB Homberg II.

If Borussia Veen or TuS Xanten finish second in Group 4, they would play against Group 2 (Remscheid/Solingen/Wuppertal) and Group 6 (Essen/Oberhausen) to determine additional promotion spots. The District League groups will have six teams each in the 2025/26 season.

The qualification groups for the District Leagues have been drawn, with new entrants coming from the football districts of Grevenbroich/Neuss, Rees/Bocholt, Düsseldorf, and Duisburg/Mülheim/Dinslaken. Each District League group will have one promotion spot, with two additional promotion spots to be determined through the three-game round.

In the event of a tie in the final table, the direct comparison decides. There are ten possible scenarios for the relegation from the Regionalliga, with the six fifteenth-placed teams determining three more relegation spots in playoff games with home and away matches.

In the Moers Kreisliga A, only one fixed promotion spot exists this year. The search for the next contenders in the lower leagues is well underway, and the excitement is building for the upcoming season.
